My grandmother from Lebanon always had a bowl of za'atar and olive oil on the breakfast table. I grew up dipping bread in it every morning and thought everyone did this. When I got to university I realized this was not universal. Now I understand it is a specific Lebanese-Palestinian-Syrian tradition going back centuries.
